Key homelessness and housing data shows that homelessness in the U.S. reached a record high of over 771,000 people in January 2024, driven by a severe affordable housing crisis and increases in both unsheltered and emergency shelter populations.
While service systems have helped more people, they are under-resourced, and 2024 saw significant increases in certain groups, including children and the disabled.
Food: Key Statistics & Data
Prevalence: Around 23% of the population is food insecure, a rate similar to the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Children: Approximately 1 in 6 children in California face hunger.
Demographics: Black and Latine households experience higher rates of food insecurity compared to white households.
Vulnerable Groups: Single adults with children and immigrant families are particularly affected.
